The Society for Mathematical Psychology promotes the advancement and communication of research in mathematical psychology and related disciplines. Mathematical psychology is broadly defined to include work of a theoretical character that uses mathematical methods, formal logic, or computer simulation. The Society journal is the Journal of Mathematical Psychology.

Postdoctoral Positions at the University of Memphis (Full)

Three postdoctoral positions are now available in the Institute for Intelligent Systems (IIS) at the University of Memphis. Individuals who fill these positions will help to develop the next generation of intelligent tutoring systems that use conversational agents to assist students to learn. The postdoctoral researchers will be working in a highly interdisciplinary institute collaborating with students, staff, and faculty in several departments, including computer science, psychology, mathematics, engineering, and education. The IIS at the University of Memphis has a long tradition of mentoring postdoctoral researchers and has a great track record of placing them in excellent teaching and research positions.

Basic functions include research, development, implementation and evaluation (RDIE) of advanced learning environments (ALE) as part of the Office of Naval Research (ONR) STEM Grand Challenge Project (ONR STEM GCP).

Typical Duties & Responsibilities include:

  • Participate in all aspects of ONR STEM GCP with an emphasis on RDIE
  • Lead on research & development (RD) of project components
  • Interact with PI & Co-PIs on ONR STEM GCP
  • Supervise graduate students in journal publications and conference presentations
  • Supervise computer programmers in the development of the learning environments

Minimum Qualifications: PhD in computer science, cognitive science, and/or related areas. ABD applications are encouraged to apply with the understanding of showing a PhD diploma within 3 months of hiring.

  • Successful candidates for software engineering must have R&D experiences in software design and development.
  • Successful candidates for computational linguistics must have R&D experiences in computational linguistics, such as parsers and semantic analytical tools.
  • Successful candidates for cognitive sciences must have research experiences in cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence, research design & statistics.

Experience with technologies in the areas of human language processing, machine learning, and virtual agents are needed. Knowledge of Java, C, and/or Python and experience with cross-platform system administration is a high priority. Salary is commensurate with experience. The appointment can start as early as November 2012, but we will consider candidates who can start at a later date.
