Mathematical psychology is broadly defined to include work of a theoretical character that uses mathematical methods, formal logic, or computer simulation. Postdoctoral Research Fellow

The Laboratory for Mathematical Psychology at Indiana University and the Visual Neuroscience Laboratory at The University of Oklahoma seek a postdoctoral researcher in cognitive modeling and experimental psychology. This is a two-site study, but the resident workplace is in Bloomington, Indiana. The position is funded by the National Science Foundation.


A major duty is assisting Dr. James T. Townsend (Indiana University) and Dr. Michael J. Wenger (The University of Oklahoma) in fulfilling research outlined in an NSF grant, Building a Unified Theory-Driven Methodology for Identification of Elementary Cognitive Systems. Duties also include overseeing graduate students, undergraduate RAs, and technical assistants; planning and carrying out experiments; data analysis; model testing; and preparing manuscripts for publication.


Ph.D. in a relevant field of research; background in cognitive modeling and experimental psychology; demonstrated scientific expertise, with publications in refereed journals; extensive experience in experimental design and development; ability to create quantitative models of cognitive processing; solid programming skills, preferably with R, MATLAB, and Python; experience writing grants and manuscripts; ability to work and lead in a team environment; ability to work independently on designated projects; demonstrated interpersonal skills.

Additional Information

The position begins in the fall and is a one-year appointment; renewal for a second year is contingent on availability of funds, satisfactory performance, acceptable progress in carrying out the assigned duties, and mutual agreement. This is a 100% appointment. Salary is $40,000/year.
