Post-doc position at the Newcastle Cognitive Science Lab, University of Newcastle, Australia 

The Newcastle Cognitive Science Lab at the University of Newcastle, Australia, has a post-doctoral research position to start in late 2024, or until filled. The position is a 12-month appointment, with a potential extension for an additional 12 months pending performance.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in cognitive or mathematical psychology, cognitive science, or related fields. They will work in a team and are expected to have skills in cognitive/computational modelling techniques and experimental psychology techniques.

The project:
This project aims to investigate a computational cognitive science framework for attentional control traits and states. The project is funded by the Australia-US International Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (AUSMURI). It involves multi-disciplinary collaboration between Australian and US universities, with expertise spanning mathematical psychology, experimental psychology, cognitive neuroscience, human factors, and software engineering. 
 
The research environment: You will work with Guy Hawkins, Andrew Heathcote and Rohan Walker from the School of Psychological Sciences and School of Biomedical Sciences, both at the University of Newcastle. There will be opportunity to work with faculty in the School of Psychological Sciences including Scott Brown, Ami Eidels, and Quentin Gronau.

Benefits: This is a full-time research position with full benefits. The expected salaries will start at academic level A6, which pays $99,755p.a., plus 17% superannuation benefits, and leave entitlements.

We expect to interview shortlisted candidates in the week commencing September 16, 2024.

Selection Criteria: 
Essential 
  • PhD in mathematical psychology, cognitive psychology, cognitive science, or related and relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in quantitative cognitive modelling / computational modelling.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and delivering behavioural experiments suitable for analysis by cognitive models.
  • Demonstrated experience with coding and statistical software (R, Matlab, and alike; preference for R). 
  • Excellent research track record evidenced by publications in top-tier journals and presenting effectively at conferences and workshops. 
  • High-level oral and written communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated excellent work ethic. 

Desirable 
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary collaborative team.
