Dr. Gregory Cox wins the 2023 William K. Estes Early Career Award.

MATHPSYCH.ORG — Gregory E. Cox, Ph.D., was named winner of the prestigious Society for Mathematical Psychology William K. Estes Early Career Fellow Award (2023) on July 20, 2023, for exceptional published research in the field of mathematical psychology by an early career researcher. Dr. Cox won the highly competitive award from a pool of six nominees, all of whom received their Ph.D. no more than eight years ago.

Praise for Dr. Cox from eminent members of the Mathematical Psychology community included that he “is a truly exceptional young scholar with a truly exceptional record of important publications who is already a star in the field,” “is an elite theoretician and one of the sharpest young researchers in mathematical psychology,” and “excels at all aspects of psychological research: a theoretically-driven understanding of the state of the field, a mastery of the design and analysis of complex experiments, expertise in the mathematical and computational modeling of data, and the ability to present his arguments clearly and forcefully.” His former doctoral advisor, Richard M. Shiffrin, Ph.D., went on to state that Dr. Cox is “a quintessential mathematical psychologist with deep and insightful models in a variety of domains ranging through studies of cognition, cognitive neuroscience, and the practice of science.”

Dr. Cox earned his Ph.D. from Indiana University, Bloomington in 2015. He then held positions as a postdoctoral researcher at Syracuse University and Vanderbilt University before joining the Psychology Faculty at the University at Albany, State University of New York in 2020. He is the author of many publications across a range of journals including the Society for Mathematical Psychology’s journals and many other top-tier publications. In addition to the Estes Early Career Award, he has received recognition for his research from the Psychonomic Society, the Cognitive Science Society, and the Cognitive Science Program at Indiana University.
